Background and Context

IASW members have identified skills development as the top CPD support they require with counselling identified as the top theme (Survey of CPD needs, Sept 2023)

This skills workshop will build confidence and conscious competence on the extent of counselling skills used in everyday social work practice. It aims to heighten awareness of how social worker’s use of purposeful, informed listening and responding are the practices of a skilled professional. It will provide participants with the opportunity to reattune to their use of counselling skills.

Social workers can underestimate the extent to which they use counselling skills in their practice, with the lack of recognition skewed by a focus on the method or tools used rather than the skills and knowledge underpinning the application of same.

This workshop aims to shift awareness and understanding, supporting participants to recognise and reaffirm the theories and knowledge underpinning their use of counselling skills and what they need do to further develop their knowledge and application of same.

Learning Outcomes

  • Increased consciousness of approaches/paradigms and theories influencing own social work practice and application of counselling skills
